Position details

Employees at the APS5 classification or higher are invited to apply for a temporary transfer to the Publishing, Industry Liaison and Listing section. This vacancy is for the period six months, with a possibility of permanent filling. It is expected the position will become available immediately.

Division and branch responsibilities

The Pharmaceutical Benefits Division aims to provide all Australians with access to cost-effective and high quality pharmaceutical services. The division is responsible for:
  • Improving health outcomes by ensuring access to the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) medicines for all eligible Australians.
  • Maintaining the effectiveness and affordability of the PBS.
  • Improving the efficiency of the PBS and the quality use of medicines.
  • Improving health outcomes through National Medicines Policy initiatives.
  • Implementing the Fourth Community Pharmacy Agreement to ensure maintenance of a viable network of community pharmacies and fair payments to pharmacists for PBS medicine supply and professional services.
  • Informing and managing cost effective listing considerations through support of the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC) and its subcommittees
  • Managing Australia’s obligations under the pharmaceutical provisions of the Australia United States Free Trade Agreement (AUSFTA).
The Pharmaceutical Evaluation Branch is responsible for providing listing, pricing and general advice to the Minister for Health and Ageing on issues relating to the PBS. We ensure medicines listed on the PBS and Vaccines listed on the National Immunisation Program are both effective and affordable. To achieve this, we support a number of advisory bodies including the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC) and its subcommittees, and the Pharmaceutical Benefits Pricing Authority (PBPA). We also provide advice on particular drugs. These activities are carried out in conjunction with all other branches in the division and Medicare Australia.

About the position

The successful applicants will:
  • provide secretariat support to the Expert Advisory Panel (EAP) on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Medicines and the Joint Medicines Policy Conference (JMPC) Organising Committee
  • undertake procurement activities for the engagement of IT professionals to maintain the PBS website and PBS Monthly Publishing System (MPS)
  • assist in the timely monthly production and distribution of the Schedule of Pharmaceutical Benefits (including smaller Schedule supplements and PBS data extracts)
  • prepare data and supporting documentation for listing of pharmaceutical benefits on the PBS
  • undertake data entry using a Mainframe database application
  • prepare both complex and routine correspondence to pharmaceutical manufacturers concerning changes to pharmaceutical benefits listings
  • maintain MS Excel spreadsheets and MS Access databases used for PBS data capture and reporting purposes
  • undertake administration tasks associated with the implementation of new policies and projects within the branch. This would include preparation of various projects and assistance with the coordination of user acceptance testing for new IT systems.

Job specific capabilities

Applicants are required to be able to demonstrate:
  • ability to build and maintain strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • ability to provide high level secretariat support to a number of committees
  • excellent organisational and communication skills including experience in preparing minutes, briefings and correspondence
  • good attention to detail and the capacity to meet strict deadlines
  • demonstrate data management skills and experience working with a variety of software packages such as electronic publishing systems, IT databases, Microsoft Office suite etc.
  • demonstrate a familiarity with Internet applications
  • possess general administrative skills.
Knowledge of the PBS and/or familiarity with drug names and/or medical terminology would be an advantage but is not essential.
